INTRODUCTION:
This research intends to understand different kinds of weaving techniques. Starting from a basic 2D weaving to 3D weaving. Further exploring the method with different materials , their combinations and post weaving processes
2D WEAVE :
In standard 2-dimensional weaving (the left illustration), weft threads (red) are woven through warp threads (black). In the simplest possible pattern, the weft alternates between passing above and below the warp, creating a single layer of fabric
ATTEMPT 1:
MATERIALS : Woolen threads , cardboard , scissors , scale .
PROCESS : Wrap threads (white) are arranged parallelly ,1.5 cm apart through the cuts made on both the ends of the cardboard piece and tied to create tension. The weft thread (yellow) passing alternately above and below the warp, creating a single layer of fabric .
3D WEAVE :
In 3-dimensional weaving, the goal is to create thickness by stacking multiple layers. On conventional weaving machines, the layering is achieved by dividing the warp into multiple, separate sets. On a given pass through the warp, the weft will not intersect the warp threads that belong to a different layer. The right illustration below demonstrates this process for a three-layer weave.
ATTEMPT 1 :
MATERIALS : Sun-board (10 cm x 10 cm) , woolen threads, support to maintain tension
PROCESS : Make two 2x8 cm windows on the 2cm apart from the center of the sun-board . Make 8 cuts ,1cm apart from each other for WARP threads to pass. Place these 2 sun-board pieces 20cm apart from each other with the help of supports . used three separate colour woolen threads to identify 3 axis of WRAP .
THE SETUP
THE TOOL AND FRAME .
Observations : The frame was not able to take the tension
ATTEMPT 2 :
AIM: To create a self standing cylindrical framework for weave .
ATTEMPT 3 :
AIM : To create curves with the weave and the tension itself.
MATERIALS : Wooden cube frame ,15x15x15 cm, woolen threads .
ATTEMPT 4 :
AIM : To create a woven structure in a 3d space .
ITERATION 1 :
ITERATION 2:
OBSERVATIONS : The weave taking over the frame , some set of threads can be given/taken tension at certain phases of process .
