After our first full week of wrestling we are pleased to announce a new era in Torrey Pines wrestling history. Our team has grown exponentially as football has ended and the word has spread around campus that wrestling is fun. Currently our roster sits with around 34-38 kids and we are still hoping for a few more kids to join the team.
This past weekend we had our first varsity wrestling tournament of the year. After only having full participation for about a week we decided that it was best to take a few of the returning wrestlers to participate. We took Connor Casey at 126, Christian Navigato at 160, Renzo Vajda at 170, and Martin Suaste at 220. Everyone had a very good outing and wrestled tough for their first tournament and only a week of practice. Our top finisher was Martin Suaste who brought home some hardware with a third place finish.
Following our first weekend outing we had to come back and prepare for our first team dual against Mission Hills on Wednesday. We started the night out with a very hard fought with dual with our J.V. wrestlers. We saw a lot of good things and some things that needed to be worked on but overall it was a great showing for their first matches of the season. Although the J.V. team wrestled tough Mission Hills came away with a 30-24 victory over us.
After the J.V. dual had concluded it was time for the Varsity team to step onto the mat for the first dual meet of the year. Although our 14 man roster is not entirely full we matched up pretty evenly with Mission Hills as they were also missing some key weights. The highlight of the night was our 106lb. Freshman Christian Shearer stepping up big for the team. He wrestled a tough match and without his victory Mission Hills would have walked away with the win. With his win the final score was 36-36. This tie resulted in the official referring to criteria in the rule book to see who would win the dual. The criteria form that was used I this case was the number of wins each team accumulated during the varsity dual. Torrey Pines had 8 and Mission Hills had 6. Torrey Pines wrestling is now 1-0 for the season.
