STARS OF THE MONTH
The San Diego Sports Association – San Diego’s premier group of sports leaders and influencers – honors up to four professional, six amateur, and six prep athletes as Stars of the Month for their outstanding athletic accomplishments. The athletes are recognized in the San Diego Union Tribune, the Fowler Family Awards Center at Petco Park, on the Sports Association's social media channels and website, and at San Diego's premier sports awards gala: the Salute to the Champions. All honorees receive a Breitbard Certificate of Athletic Achievement.
PROFESSIONAL
KENNY STILLS, Football,
Houston Texans,
La Costa Canyon High alumnus
The former Maverick standout had TD receptions in multiple games and averaged over 15 yards per catch to help the Houston Texans to a 3 - 1 record in the month of December and secure a spot in the NFL playoffs.
LEVINE TOILOLO, Football,
San Francisco 49ers,
Helix High alumnus
The former Helix Scottie spent December as a key part of the 49ers rushing attack, being used on almost all offensive run snaps. The 49ers continued their amazing season with a 3-2 mark in the month of December and are on to the NFL playoffs.
AMATEUR
EMMA FOREL, Basketball, CSUSM
Guiding the No. 24/16 Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team to their best start in program history, junior Emma Forel shot 58.8% from the field in December while averaging 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. A native of Lyon, France, Forel tallied 17 rebounds at Cal State San Bernardino, the most by a Cougar this season.
BRAUN HARTFIELD, Basketball, USD
Hartfield is USD's leading scorer with 15.0 points per game. He was the only Torero to average more than 30 minutes each game during December, and had double digit points in every game.
TAYLOR KALMER, Basketball, SDSU
Kalmer averaged 18.0 points per game in SDSU's six December games as well as tied her career high with 22 points twice. Kalmer scored in double-digits in every game of the month for the Aztecs.
JULIA MACABUHAY, Basketball,
UC San Diego
Sophomore guard Julia Macabuhay averaged an impressive 15.3 points and 4.5 assists over December as the No. 22 Tritons went 3-1 on the month. Macabuhay shot 50% from beyond the arc (9-18) and 44% on field goal attempts (20-45). Right now she leads the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a 2.1 assist/turnover ratio.
JESSE MATTHEWS, Football, SDSU, Christian High alumnus
Was named the co-offensive MVP of the New Mexico Bowl after catching three passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns in a 48-11 win over Central Michigan. The two touchdowns were the first of his career and he ended up outscoring CMU, 12-11, by himself. Matthews had a 74-yard touchdown catch, SDSU’s longest offensive play this year and the longest catch of his career.
MYAH PACE, Basketball, USD
Myah Pace led San Diego women's basketball throughout the month of December on both ends of the floor. Pace recorded a new season high in points to close out 2019 in the 67-53 victory over LMU on December 30. The junior guard led San Diego's offense with 20 points and chipped in two steals, two blocks and nine rebounds in the contest. Pace also led her team and the West Coast Conference in steals during December racking up 44 so far this season. Pace currently leads the team in points per game (12.0), minutes played (437:31), blocks (11), and total points (156).
MAREK SULLIVAN, Basketball,
UC San Diego, Torrey Pines High alumnus
Making his first four career starts at UC San Diego, junior Marek Sullivan averaged 13.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in 31 minutes per game as the No. 6 Tritons went 3-1 in December. The San Diego native also averaged 2.8 steals and 2.5 assists per game for the Tritons last month.
HIGH SCHOOL
CHIBUZO AGBO, Basketball,
St. Augustine
Averaging 24.7 points and 9.7 rebounds, the Texas Tech-bound senior helped the Saints to a 15-3 start. He had 42 points and 17 rebounds against Montgomery, 35/17 against Foothills Christian and 37/15 against Brooklyn Jefferson.
KELSEY BRANSON, Soccer,
Cathedral Catholic
A sophomore, Branson earned Most Valuable Player honors in the Butch Lee Memorial Tournament, scoring in each game for the Dons. Playing multiple positions, Branson scored five goals and was credited with two assists.
TE-HINA PAOPAO, Basketball,
La Jolla Country Day
Committed to Oregon, the senior led the Torreys to a 16-1 record. LJCD stands No. 1 in MaxPreps’ Excellent 25 rankings and No. 2 in MaxPreps’ national computer rankings. Paopao is averaging 23.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
SOPHIA SANDERS, Water polo, Bishop's
A junior, Sanders helped the Knights to a 6-1 record, finishing second in the challenging Villa Park Tournament, downing Dos Pueblos and Ventura. Sanders collected 22 goals, added 19 assists and amassed 27 steals for the Knights.
MIKEY WILLIAMS, Basketball, San Ysidro
Setting a San Diego Section record with 77 points against Kearny, Williams averaged 32.6 by adding two 50-plus games and four of 37 points or more. Against Kearny, the freshman hit nine 3-pointers and 20 2-point field goals.
ADRIAN ZIMMERMAN, Soccer, Cathedral Catholic
The Dons are off to one of their best starts this season after compiling a 5-0-1 record and capturing the Francis Parker Tournament with four straight wins. The senior collected eight goals and six assists. He leads the team with 22 points.
