Introduction
Simple machines are mechanisms that are designed to reduce the amount of effort needed to perform simple tasks. There are 6 main simple machines: the wedge, wheel and axle, lever, inclined plane, screw, and pulley. The mechanical advantage of a simple machine is the ratio of output to the input force that is used to assess the performance of a mechanism. Mechanical advantage is important when building mechanisms in order to get the best results when using the least amount of energy. The projects below show a variety of simple and complex machines that use inclined planes, wheel and axles, levers, pulleys, gears, and linkages. ~PTMS Student
