Asking for Letters of Recommendation
When asking for a letter of recommendation, pick a teacher who knows you. Having a good grade in my class is not a requirement nor is it enough justification to have me write you a letter... It is much easier (and meaningful) for me to write a letter recommendation for a student who asks questions, comes to office hours, tells me about their interest, sports, clubs, activities outside of school, etc. compared to a student who scores wells, but has barely spoken to me all term.
- If you think I am a good person to ask, then ask IN PERSON! Do not list me as a reference UNLESS you have already spoken to me.
- Ask AT LEAST 2 WEEKS BEFORE the due date.
- When you come to ask for a letter of recommendation, come prepared. Print out and sign FERPA form and be able to tell me about the program you applying to. **If the school/program you are applying to requires a hard copy, please bring a pre-addressed envelope.
- IF I agree to write a letter of recommendation, I will ask you to complete a student information form. Providing thoughtful answers will allow me to write you a better letter. Allow yourself time to complete this.
- Follow up...politely remind me as the due date approaches. I will confirm once I have completed/submitted your letter of recommendation.
