Emeritus is on the cutting edge of online! We are one of the original departments to offer classes through distance education. Teaching online can be very rewarding and engaging. However, it is not simply putting information on a website. If you are interested in teaching online, you will first be required to take the SDCCE Distance Education training and successfully complete. You will then decide whether to use the Canvas platform or Google. If interested in Google, you will return to this site to learn more about setting up your course in Google.
On this site you will find:
An overview of what is required to become an online instructor with SDCE (below)
Training on using Google Sites for your course materials
Training resources (Including parts from the SDCCD Online Certification program and Title V language
Additional materials for online instructors (Check back often)
A good online class must include not only information about that week’s lesson, but also elements of student engagement and instructor contact. An online instructor faces challenges which are unique to distance education. These include:
· A website which includes a unique lesson each week. Your weekly lessons need to be more than text. Offer a variety of ways to understand the topic such as images, videos, etc.
· Online resources including the syllabus and a course calendar
· A weekly email to all enrolled students
· Prompt response to student questions or comments (within 24 to 48 hours)
· A form of student engagement (not just discussion boards, but other methods such as student projects, student made videos, web-based discussions, and more)
· Evaluations to access student understanding (simple quizzes, polls, etc.)
· Making sure that all videos on the website are closed captioned
· When you turn in your instructor availability form, you will have to also submit a template for your online. This template will include the start date, the finish date and the place and time of your orientation. You will also have to determine your teaching hours and student participation hours. The teaching hours count towards your assignment, but the student hours do not. Please consult with us prior to completing the template for the first time.
· An online class must have all students registered by the first census. Online is not considered open entry at this time.
· Attendance is by census. This means that after registering, there will be 2 times during the semester where you will poll the students to see if they are still working within your class. If they are no longer interested in the class, you will drop them with less than the full amount of hours. The census dates are 1/5 through the semester and 3/5 through the semester. If students do not respond, or if they indicate they are no longer working on the class, you must drop them. You will go to myportal.sdccd.edu, attendance and input the hours and then drop them. At the conclusion of the semester, you will assign student hours based on whether they dropped.
o Students who completed the entire semester will get full credit for all hours of class
o Students who dropped in the 1st census will receive 1/5 of the total hours of class
o Students who dropped in the 2nd census will receive 3/5 of the total hours of class
