Google Sites Training for Emeritus

There is lots to learn when teaching online. Our basic training will include five modules:

• Getting started

• Writing an effective email

• Finding and creating content

• Creating the interactive lesson on the course website

• Student contact

Keep in mind that even after completing this training, your education will not be done. You may find that you go back to these modules to remind you of things that we worked on. Things that did not make sense during training may become more clear as time goes on. Also, more information may be added to the modules such as images and videos. Feel free to come back often to review and to better understand the online process.

Module assignments are not graded, but should be submitted to show your progress. I do expect you to complete these assignments based on the material of the training. The final assignment will be graded, and you must achieve a passing score in order to pass the Google sites training.

This training follows the process of the Google Sites lesson from:

• Creating the Google Site yourself and including at least a home page and a page for weekly topics. As time goes on, you will probably add more (announcements, student submissions, a feedback page, etc.)

• Creating the weekly email. This will include at least the use of adequate spacing, bold headers, bulleted points, links to your course website and information on your Zoom room (if you have one) .

• Creating content. This will be the basis of your lesson. Before teaching a lesson, you need to identify what will be taught. You will find reputable sources, and begin to create a handout which summarizes that weekly topics. You will make sure to cite sources and create this in an accessible way. This handout will be used to create your online lesson page.

• Creating the online lesson. This is where you will put your handout, and add special features to help further the understanding. It may include a combination of images, diagrams, videos, links to resources and more.

• Including student contact. Student contact is a big part of your online class. Already, you have the weekly email and Zoom sessions. However, additional forms of contact are necessary to insure that students are engaged and learning. These include quizzes, forms, assignments, discussion boards, student projects and more.

Your final assignment, the one that will determine if you succeeded in the training, will include all of these aspects for one week's lesson. You will include:

• The weekly email (as discussed in Module 2)

• The handout in a PDF form (as discussed in Module 3)

• The online lesson and your course website (discussed in Module 4)

• And, on your lesson page or in some other manner, an additional method of student contact (discussed in Module 5).

Your assignment will be graded based on how well you fulfilled the criteria mentioned above.

These are the five modules of instruction. Each module opens on its own page, and has a number of sections. It also has an assignment which must be completed before you can move to the next. The final assignment (Week 5) includes all of the above aspects of your online class, and is the only one that is graded. Pay attention to the rubic.
