Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My student was referred to the SST process what does that mean?
A: It means your child teacher(s) and other relevant support staff have tried various interventions, modification, and accommodations with your child and they have been unresponsive to these supports. A request is made to one of our counselors Betsy (kindergarten to 3rd grade) or Monique (4th to 8th grade). Counselor will request a meeting and when necessary pull in other relevant support staff.
Q: What will the meeting look like?
A: The meeting will be comprised of parents/guardians, teacher, counselor and relevant support staff including but not limited to administration, school psychologist, speech language pathologist, occupational therapist, etc. Depending on the referral for the meeting and the age of your child - sometimes your child will be brought into the meeting.
Q: How long will meeting last?
A: Typically initial SST meetings last for 45 minutes. Follow up meetings are kept to 30 minutes to accommodate teacher, counselor and parent/guardian schedules.
Q: What should I bring?
A: Any relevant paperwork from outside services, recent doctor's visit, any outside evaluation/assessment. Anything that will help generate support ideas and give us a better perspective on how to best support your child. Please also fill out and bring the parent preparation sheet.
Q: We had the meeting...now what?
A: It takes 6-8 weeks to typically see how a student respond to the accommodations, modifications and other strategies (i.e., small group with counseling) . We typically schedule a follow up meeting at the closing of the meeting. Be mindful that sometimes behaviors get worst before they improve as change is hard.
