Reading and Writing

reading and writing tips for parents

How you can help your child develop reading and writing skills outside of the classroom.

In kindergarten, children learn the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. They discover that sounds and letters can be combined to make words, words can be put together to make sentences and that sentences can be written down to read.

In 1st grade, children learn to “blend” the sounds of single letters and pairs of letters into words that they can read and write. First-graders learn to read and understand simple illustrated books and stories, articles, and other sources of information.

In 2nd grade, children deepen their understanding of letters and sounds and learn many new strategies for figuring out words and making sense of what they read.

In 3rd grade, children practice reading with fluency, using a variety of strategies to make sense of unknown words. They write clear sentences and paragraphs to show understanding of the topics they have studied and the books they have read.
