The art studio at GISS
Students have access to a well-equipped Art Studio at GISS. Many dedicated GISS graduates have been accepted to world-class institutions to study art and design after completing an 'Advanced Placement’ Portfolio in grade twelve.
All required art supplies are provided, with the exception of a 9x12 sketchbook, pencil and eraser. These items should be purchased during the first week.
Art Studio 9/10
Students learn foundational skills of Studio art practise and creative expression. Students will explore a variety of art forms through the use of different tools, strategies and techniques. Assessment for all studio art classes is based on practical studio observations and e-portfolios.
Art Studio 11/12
Builds on skills developed in Art Studio 9/10 but with more emphasis on developing artistic voice through original compositions. Students will research a topic in modern art history and explore career paths related to art and design. Assessment for all studio art classes is based on practical studio observations and e-portfolios.
Studio Arts 2-D 10/11/12
Extension course in drawing, painting or printmaking (2-D Media). It is expected that students are self-motivated and familiar with basic tools and materials. Assessment for all studio art classes is based on practical studio observations and e-portfolios submitted at regular intervals.
Advanced Placement Studio Art: Drawing (Outside the Timetable)
Grade twelve Students wishing to pursue post-secondary studies in Visual Art can gain first year university transfer credits by submitting a portfolio exam of fifteen ‘college level’ pieces in May of each year. The program is an extension of the grade twelve visual arts curriculum, but is considerably more rigorous; students are expected to produce additional work at home, participate in extra-curricular Art activities, and demonstrate leadership in the studio. There is also an exam fee payable upon acceptance into the program (approx. $160 CDN).
