Many of you now have an educator laptop and have become familiar with it. It is a great tool that can give users the ability to be able to use their computer at home and access all our work files via our Home drive H: as we would in our schools. A few best practices I would like for users to focus on is to power off their laptops when leaving the school and when using it at home. The shutting off and restarting will ensure that any updates are going in that are needed, as well ensuring a fresh connection to get direct access to the network and have access to all your drives. I am going to show a few instructions for proper shutdown etc using pictures below.
Making sure you are connected to the network to ensure Direct Access
In the bottom Right hand corner of your screen at startup you will see this icon (circled in RED) Before initial login check to see that you are connected to a WiFi network.
When you click on the previous icon it will open to this box in the bottom Right corner and show you the available WiFi networks as well if you are connected to a WiFi network. If you are at school you will want to be connected to SD61, if home it will be your WiFi network. In order to have direct access and be able to access all drives, you will need to ensure full WiFi connection before logging into your laptop.
Proper shutdown of your laptop
The button that is circled is in fact a power button on your laptop, however when pushed while the computer is on it merely puts the laptop into sleep mode. Pushed when off turns on the power to boot up the laptop.
When the laptops are not regularly power cycled, they sometimes can be swamped by updates. This cuts into usage time, and can be a hindrance to getting a fix or a software downloaded when you have to wait for the sometimes lengthy update process to complete.
For proper shutdown go to the bottom left corner and click the windows icon
Then click on the power symbol in the bottom left corner
Click the shutdown button and the computer will shutdown
If any updates are needed or being deployed to your laptop, this is the screen that you will commonly see. If this screen comes during shutdown or startup it is important that you do not interrupt the process and to make sure you keep connected to the network in order for the updates to be installed without interruption.
