When you improvise, you make up your own melody. Here is how to improvise with the blues scale, using Jam and Jelly Blues.
Learn how to play the 12-bar blues! Next week, we will start improvising.
One of my favourite songs from K'naan. It was the graduation song for our school a couple of years ago, and the official song of the FIFA World Cup in 2010. The chords move slowly and are quite simple: D, G, B minor, and A7. You can also sing along with K'naan.
Review how to play the D major scale. For all you hot-shots out there, I also teach you how to play in thirds. This means you add the note that is 2 steps above in between each scale note. Don't worry, I go slowly. And you can always rewind.
Regular D scale: D-E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D
In thirds: D-F#-E-G-F#-A-G-B-A-C#-B-D-C#-E-D-
Back down: D-B-C#-A-B-G-A-F#-G-E-F#-D-E-C#-D
Or think of it in numbers: 1-3-2-4-3-5-4-6-5-7-6-8-7-9-8
Remember when we did this for last year's Music Monday? There are a few new-ish chords here - go slow and repeat, repeat, repeat! You can also play the D major scale for harmony in the chorus.

Hello ukulele enthusiasts! Here is the Canadian legend, Jann Arden, singing with USchool, a Canadian ukulele program reaching 900 students in 55 schools! Happy listening!
USchool also has released some practise videos for those who have their own ukuleles and are itching to practise.
USchool was founded by J. Chalmers Doane, who wrote the "blue book" that we use in class. The program is now run by Doane's daughter, Melanie, who had the same ukulele teacher as me!
