I look forward to beginning a new year with the Div 1 students. In September our main focus will be on building community and establishing routines. Some of our learning activities are highlighted below.
Language Arts-We'll begin the year with some writing activities that allow me to learn a bit more about the students, and perhaps they will learn a bit more about eachother in the process as well.
There will be a daily opportunity for independent reading. There is a large selection of classroom books. Students are also welcome to bring a book from home. We will discuss expectations for this reading, but students are encouraged to find fiction or non-fiction material at their reading level that they can read on an ongoing basis.
Math-We'll begin with a mini-unit on chance and probability. Next, we will be focusing on number sense and some review. Throughout the school year, we'll have review of basic facts (addition, subtraction moving into multiplication and division).
Science-Mrs. Cristante will be teaching Science to Division 1 this year. This will start in the middle of September. I will be teaching Social Studies to Div 1 and 2.
Social Studies-Our first unit will be focused on Truth and Reconciliation, as well as Orange Shirt Day. Next we will be discussing government, in a lead up to our local elections in October.
French-In French we will be using the TPRS Program (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling ) which focuses on developing proficiency in French through exposure to oral interactive storytelling.
PE-Once per week we will be going on a Duck Pond walk for our DPA. This is to develop an appreciation for the art of walking and talking (or walking and listening or walking and being at peace with nature). In addition, we will be making observations about the changes that take place at the pond over the year. We have 3 gym blocks each week where will be playing cooperative games and working on game skills.
