This course provides flexible and personalized learning support for students experiencing academic and/or social‑emotional challenges. Students develop a deeper understanding of themselves as learners and identify strategies to overcome or manage barriers to learning.
Self‑efficacy is a person’s belief in their ability to succeed. Throughout this course, students identify areas of personal strength, develop new skills, reflect on their values, and understand how these factors influence learning, behaviour, and community involvement.
This course supports students in building confidence, independence, self‑awareness, and long‑term success.
This course does not run as a daily class like Science or English. Credit is earned through engagement, reflection, and collaboration with staff. All students in the school earn credit by participating.
Check‑In Meetings
Students meet with staff every 1-2 weeks for a 15‑minute check‑in. These meetings focus on progress, challenges, and goal-setting to ensure school success.
Topics
Course progress
Relationships (peer, family, SSA staff, community supports)
Identifying barriers to learning
Setting a goal before the next meeting
As part of this course, students participate in a daily Circle, a structured activity that supports community, connection, and personal growth. Circle is a time for students to:
Check in about how they are feeling and share personal reflections
Receive and share announcements and important school updates
Focus on community development, building trust, respect, and collaboration among peers
The Circle at SSA models traditional Coast Salish protocols, which include:
Speaking with respect and intention, only when holding the talking piece
Listening fully without interrupting others
Acknowledging the contributions of all participants
Honouring shared space and community, creating a safe environment for dialogue
This practice is designed to honour and respect the traditional teachings of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation, on whose lands we live, work, and learn.
It fosters a sense of belonging, self-awareness, and responsibility while supporting the core goals of the course: building self-efficacy, resilience, and meaningful connections.
The Circle is a highly structured and intentional space designed to promote connection, understanding, and dialogue in a group. The Circle models basic community functioning: it holds a healthy balance between individual needs and group needs. As a result, the Circle is a powerful tool for resortative justice and conflict resolution. The Circle allows the gathering of differences, holds space for multiple perspectives, and recognizes the existence of multiple truths.
