Daily Five is offering a video session of how to increase your child's reading stamina and independence.
Of particular importance is that they have the opportunity to pick just right books using the following guidelines
I -choose a book
Purpose -why do I want to read it?
Interest- does it interest me?
Comprehend -Do I understand what I read?
Know -do I know most of the words?)
Children should read to themselves for a minimum of 20 minutes/day to build stamina. Parents can help by providing a comfy place for their child to read. Here are some options if you can't get to the library:
ENGLISH:
FRENCH:
Je lis, je lis, littératie ! -Available through your child's teacher
Duolingo Mobile App
Storybird -Requires membership
After reading parents can help by asking a few questions about what has been read to help the child solidify their understanding of the text. Keep this task light and conversational.
-What connections do you have to the story, characters or plot?
-What situation in your life does this story remind you of?
-How do you picture (visualize) the character or the setting?
-What was the problem and how did they solve it?
-Did the story change your thinking in any way? How and why do you think it did?
-Is there anything the author didn't explicitly say that you figured out by inferring (reading between the lines)?
Videos created for students to teach behaviours that help to keep reading fun and important.
