The Role of the School Social Worker


  • To enhance the educational and psycho-social development of all school-age children

  • To promote best professional practice among school social workers

  • To enhance more effective communication among school social workers, members of related disciplines, and the community

  • To be involved in social action designated to improve educational and psycho-social conditions for children and families


Social Emotional Learning is the process in which children become aware of their emotions and learn how to manage them. It also includes the process of learning to set and achieve personal goals, demonstrate responsible decision making, and learning the skills to establish and maintain social relationships.



The State of Illinois has identified social emotional goals for students grades Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Goal #1

Develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success.

Goal #2

Use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships.

Goal #3

Demonstrate decision making skills and responsible behavior in personal, school, and community contexts.

District 44 Social Emotional Learning Competencies

Self-Awareness

The ability to accurately recognize one's own emotions and thoughts and how they influence behavior. This includes the ability to assess one's own strengths and limitations and display optimism and confidence.

Self-Management

The ability to regulate one's emotions, thoughts and behaviors appropriately in different situations. This includes effective stress management, controlling impulses and setting and working towards personal goals.

Social Awareness

The ability to empathize with others and demonstrate perspective taking skills with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures. This includes understanding social and ethical norms for behavior.

Relationship Skills

The ability to establish and maintain healthy relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This includes communicating effectively, active listening skills, cooperation and handling conflict.

Responsible Decision Making

The ability to make constructive and respectful decisions about personal behavior and social interactions. This includes using consideration for ethical standards, safety concerns, social norms and the well-being of self and others.
