These are listening activities. I would use this together as a whole class. Have them predict, listen, discuss (using reading strategies learned in English like prior knowledge), apply strategies for French learning such as cognates (words that sound similar in both languages), and determine what is happening as a group. Then hit the translate button and verify. I would also have them listen without seeing the text and see what words they can recognize from listening only.

This is a book called "Aboie, George". It is a great listening and reading activity. There is narration in the powerpoint.

HERE is a website that has lots of corny songs that can get kids to learn some basic French. There are a lot of good base language building here with introductions, common words, family relations, etc.

Reading in French

Here are some images of signs in French. You can have your students apply strategies for making sense of written French.

French Commercials

Below are some videos of French commercials and a script for the commercials. Have the students watch the commercials and see how much they understand. Then have them look at the script for each commercial and see how much more they can understand. This is about getting the GIST of what is being presented. They can listen for cognates, look for facial expressions and body language, and make connections to their own experiences.
