Program Philosophy
What is place and nature-based education?
Place and nature-based education weaves the local environment, community, and relationships together as the foundation for learning. Learners learn through direct experiences on the land, in their community, and alongside local experts and mentors, making learning relevant, meaningful, and connected to real-world contexts.
What does "learning in relationship" mean?
At Awaken, we believe learning happens through relationships, with ourselves, each other, our communities, and the land. We prioritize connection, belonging, reciprocity, and shared learning.
What do you mean by the "more-than-human world"?
The more-than-human world includes the lands, waters, plants, animals, ecosystems, and living communities with whom we share this place. We recognize that there is much to learn from observing, experiencing, and being in relationship with the natural world.
Learning Experience
How much time is spent outdoors?
We spend significant time learning outdoors throughout the year, embracing seasonal changes and learning from the natural environment whenever possible.
Do students still study academic subjects like math, science, and English?
Yes. Learners meet provincial graduation requirements while engaging in meaningful, interdisciplinary learning experiences. Learning is cross-curricular, often connected to real-world projects, community experiences, and inquiry-based projects.
How is learning assessed?
Assessment includes ongoing reflection, project work, portfolios, self-assessment, learner conferences, and feedback. We value growth, process, and authentic demonstrations of understanding.
Future Pathways
Is Awaken a good fit for every learner?
Awaken is a strong fit for learners who are independent and willing to challenge themselves. Learners who value community engagement, collaborative-learning, and time spent outdoors tend to do well at Awaken. Learners should be willing to take ownership of their learning and participate actively in their education.
How does Awaken prepare students for life after high school?
Awaken supports the development of critical thinking, communication, adaptability, collaboration, independence, and leadership skills. Learners graduate with meaningful real-world experiences and a strong understanding of themselves and their communities.
Can students still attend university or college after Awaken?
Yes. Learners complete graduation requirements through Awaken and can pursue post-secondary pathways, trades, entrepreneurship, gap years, work opportunities, and other futures aligned with their goals.
