Enliven Your Learning
Awaken Education is the Okanagan's place and nature-based, fully immersive secondary school program. Awaken reimagines what school can be, providing rich and meaningful learning experiences that blend place and nature-based pedagogy, inquiry projects, community mentorship, and land-connected learning.
At the intersection of ecological education, innovation, and personalized learning, Awaken places community connections and the more-than-human world at the heart of education. At Awaken, we learn from and with local experts, community mentors, one another, and the land itself, recognizing that meaningful learning happens everywhere.
Awaken is a secondary-level, inquiry-based program that prepares learners for life beyond the classroom. Through diverse experiences on the land and within the community, learners build confidence, resilience, independence, and a strong sense of self. They cultivate meaningful relationships with their communities, the natural world, and the places they call home, fostering a lifelong connection to place, a deep sense of belonging, and the confidence to advocate for both human and more-than-human needs.
Awaken Education gratefully acknowledges that we learn and gather on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan People, whose deep relationship with these lands continues to guide and inspire our learning.
At Awaken, we recognize that truth and reconciliation require ongoing reflection, learning, and action. Through relationships with Syilx Okanagan Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community members, and the land itself, we continue to deepen our understanding of our responsibilities to the places we call home.
Guided by place and nature-based pedagogy, we seek to understand the natural world as a teacher and mentor rather than simply a setting for learning. Through practices of reciprocity, respect, and Two-Eyed Seeing, we strive to cultivate meaningful relationships with both the more-than-human world and the Syilx Okanagan Peoples, who have lived in reciprocal relationship with these lands since time immemorial.
