Having a child in Band is new to many parents, so below are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about beginning Band (and our 5-12 Band program in SCVUSD #35). If your question is not answered below please contact Mrs. Taft (mtaft@scv35.org) or Ms. Roth (lroth@scv35.org).
Q: How many concerts does beginning Band perform a year?
A: We perform 4 concerts throughout the year. We have one per quarter.
Q: Does my child have to go to EVERY concert listed in the band handbook?
A: No, students are only required to be at concerts hosted at the school that they attend.
Q: How much does my child have to practice?
A: For beginning Band we recommend setting a goal of at least 3 times a week, for 20 minutes each time. This allows the student to make the skills they are learning at school permanent and builds their confidence.
Q: Where do I get an instrument?
A: There are several great local music stores that rent instruments, and more information is available here. The local stores have very affordable prices and ensure you will get a quality instrument. Please DO NOT buy an instrument online for your child. Instruments sold on most websites (Ebay, Amazon, etc) are inferior quality and are made from materials that are easily broken and difficult to repair (many music stores will not service these instruments if they are badly damaged). Similar to purchasing a car, quality is more important than cost and should not be overlooked. If you are looking at purchasing an instrument rather than renting please contact Mrs. Leaf, who would be more than glad to help and provide feedback. All instruments must have a natural finish to them No colored instruments (such as red, orange, blue, pink, purple or green) will be permitted. PLEASE contact your director before making ANY instrument purchases.
Q: Is Band required in 6th grade?
A: Band is an elective that is not required.
