We want students to develop good habits of responsibility and discipline by completing nightly homework. Third grade homework has three required components and one optional component.
Homework is given on Monday and due on Friday.
Reading Log- Students should be reading 20 or more minutes at home each day. They should be completing TWO iReady reading lessons for homework each week. Most iReady lessons should take about 20 minutes to complete; however, "close reading' lessons take closer to an hour to complete. They can read books to siblings or pets. They can read to their adults or do shared reading with their adults. They can read on Learning A to Z or complete reading lessons on iReady. Other language arts activities might also be accepted by your child's teacher.
Math Log- In addition to reading, students are also expected to be practicing math for at least 20 minutes each day. They should also be completing TWO iReady math lessons for homework each week. Most iReady lessons should take about 20 minutes to complete. Parents may decide what the other best math practice options are for their child. Strategy games, iReady, math games, flash cards, and practice pages from the math books are great ways for students to complete their math log each night.
Spelling "Dear Parents" Practice Page (Take Home Task)- This gives students a chance to practice the spelling rules we learn in class. Sometimes the directions are hard to find. Please read the "Dear Parents" paragraph with your child before they complete the page. Families can decide which night works best for completing the spelling page.
Optional Writing- You may choose to have your child complete an optional writing assignment. Some prompts will require adult guidance. Optional writing assignments should not take more than two 20 minute sessions for students to complete. They can be completed in a journal at home and do not need to be turned in.
