Leaders in Our Group

History

Birralee Scout Group was started in 1995 in Palmerston. Since then the group has grown into one of the largest scout groups in the ACT.

We all wear the Birralee Scarf of the blue and green. This was because we first meet at Palmerston Primary School and they were the colours of the school.

Jemalong or Felicity is the Group Leader. She has been involved in the group in one way or another since 1997 but became a Cub leader for Yowie Cubs in 2008 and then Group Leader in 2014.

Jemalong means Platypus in an Indigenous language. When Felicity was a Brownie Leader in 1991 the Brownies chose her name for her and she has used it ever since.

Joey Leaders

Kanga - Mel P

Mel P is an Echo Joey Leader. She started scouting after coming on the Birralee Scout Group Snow Camp in 2015 as an adult Leader.

Her scouting name is Kanga.

Waratah - Robyn

Robyn is an Echo Joey Leader. She previously was a Guide Leader but joined Scouts as a leader at Birralee in 2016.

Her scouting name is Waratah.

Leena - Irene

Irene is an Echo Joey Leader. She previously was a Guide Leader but joined Scouts as a leader at Birralee in 2017.

Her scouting name is Leena.

Rikki - Mel W

Mel W is a Cooee Joey Leader. She has been involved in a number of Scout Groups as a Youth member and other adult scouting roles. She joined Birralee Scouts as a leader in 2017.

Her scouting name is Rikki.

Gang Gang - Martin

Martin is a Cooee Joey Leader. He was a Scout as a Youth member. He joined Birralee Scouts as a leader in 2017.

His scouting name is Gang Gang.

Blue Gum - Mel C

Mel C is a Cooee Joey Leader. She has been involved in a number of Scout Groups as a Youth member and other adult scouting roles. She joined Birralee Scouts as a leader in 2017.

Her scouting name is Blue Gum.

Cub Leaders

Raksha - Nicole

Nicole is a Yowie Cub Leader. She was a Girl Guide in her youth. She joined Birralee Scouts as a leader in 2016.

Her scouting name is Raksha.

Matt

Matt is a Yowie Cub Leader and Bethungra Rover. He started scouting as a Joey with Birralee Echo Mob in 2002 and has been an active member ever since! In 2014 Matt started the Bethungra Rover Unit and in 2017 became a Cub Leader.

In his time in scouting Matt has been to many Scouting events including going all the way over to Iceland for the World Scout Rover Moot. He has also spent time working on Scouts ACT Branch teams in a number of different roles.

Platypus - Dan

Dan is a Yowie Cub Leader. He started scouting as a youth member and joined in Birralee Scouts as a Leader in 2019

His scouting name is Platypus.

Gekko - Liam

Liam is a Yowie Cub Leader. He has been involved in a number of Scout Groups as a Youth member and is currently a Bethungra Rover. He became a leader in 2019.

His scouting name is Gekko.

Matkah - Elizabeth

Elizabeth is a Bunyip Cub Leader. She joined Birralee Scouts as a leader in 2017.

Her scouting name is Matkah.

Hathi - Jay G

Jay G is a Bunyip Cub Leader. He started scouting as a youth member and joined in as a leader in 2017

His scouting name is Hathi.

Koala - Beth

Beth is a Bunyip Cub Leader in Training. She started scouting overseas as a youth member and last year joined Birralee as a leader.

Her scouting name is Koala

Claire

Claire is a Bunyip Cub Leader in Training. She started scouting as a youth member and last year joined Birralee as a leader.

We have yet to give her a Scouting name.

Scout Leaders

Kingfisher - Jay R

Jay R is a Girrawah Scout Leader. He started as a youth member in Victoria in 1996, and joined Birralee in 2015 after moving to the ACT. He’s participated in three Jamborees and recently attended the World Scout Conference.

His scouting name is Kingfisher.

Garden Snail - Jason

Jason is a Girrawah Scout Leader and joined Birralee as a leader in 2018 after being an Adult Helper in the group since 2015.

His scouting name is Garden Snail.

Roo - Michael

Michael is a Girrawah Scout Leader and was involved in Scouts as a youth member. He joined Birralee as a leader in 2018

His scouting name is Roo.

Bandicoot - Steff

Steff was last a uniformed member of Scouts in 1989 as a Venturer before joining the Army in 1990. Moving to Canberra this year, she was previously a parent helper with the 1st Wagga Wagga Scout Group's Joey Mob. Steff commenced her Scout Leader training with Girrawah Troop this year and is excited to be returning to the Scouting movement in uniform after more than 3 decades away.

Blow Fish - Maddy

Maddie is a Girrawah Scout Leader in Training. She was previously a youth member and is currently a Rover with Lake Tuggerangong Sea Scouts. She joined Birralee this year as a leader.

Drop Bear - Andrew

Andrew is a Gungaderra Scout Leader. He started scouting in 2015.

His scouting name is Drop Bear.

Panda - Rod

Rod is a Gungaderra Scout Leader. He started scouting in 2018.

His scouting name is Panda.

Puma - Peter

Peter has been a leader since 2000.

He has been involved in Scouting in:

Venturer Leaders

Bagheera - Chris

Chris's first Scouting name was Bagheera, as he started his Scouting journey as a Cub Scout Leader with Yowie Pack at the start of 2011. He changed to the Venturer several

years ago, and normally just gets called Chris.

Dirawong - Des

Des is a Karla Birna Venturer Leader. He started scouting in 2017.

His scouting name is Dirrawong but everyone just calls him Des.
