Elementary School Book Recommendations

These are a few of our favorite books with positive LGBTQIA+ representation for students in kindergarten through second grade and third grade through fifth grade. They are all on the Santa Cruz County LGBTQ+ Literature Project Top 40 Book List.

"A Family is a Family is a Family" by Sara O'Leary

When a teacher asks the children in her class to think about what makes their families special, the answers are all different in many ways — but the same in the one way that matters most of all.

"Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope" by Jodie Patterson

Penelope knows that he's a boy. (And a ninja.) The problem is getting everyone else to realize it.

"Cuando Amamos Cantamos / When We Love Someone We Sing to Them" by Ernesto J. Martínez, Maya C. Gonzalez, and Feliciano J. G. Martínez

The story of a young boy who asks his father if there is a song for a boy who loves a boy.

"Grandad's Camper" by Harry Woodgate

Gramps and Grandad were adventurers. But after Gramps died, Grandad hasn't felt like traveling anymore. So, their amazing granddaughter comes up with a clever plan to get Grandad excited to explore again.

"Ho'onani: Hula Warrior" by Heather Gale and Mika Song

Ho'onani feels in-between. She doesn't see herself as wahine (girl) or kane (boy). She's happy to be in the middle. But not everyone sees it that way. When Ho'onani finds out that there will be a school performance of a traditional kane hula chant, she wants to be part of it. But can a girl really lead the all-male troupe? Ho'onani has to try.

"Julían is a Mermaid" by Jessica Love

While riding the subway home with his abuela, Julián notices three women spectacularly dressed up as mermaids. When Julián gets home, all he can think about is dressing up in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a curtain for his tail, a potted fern for his headdress. But what will Abuela think about the mess he makes—and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julián sees himself?

"Sewing the Rainbow" by Gayle E. Pitman

Gilbert Baker always knew he wanted a life full of color and sparkle. It wasn’t easy; life tried over and over again to make Gilbert conform. But his sparkle always shone through. Set against the backdrop of San Francisco during the gay rights movement of the 1970s, Gilbert’s story unfolds just like the flag he created: in a riot of color, joy, and pride.

"Stella Brings the Family" by Miriam B. Schiffer

Stella's class is having a Mother's Day celebration, but what's a girl with two daddies to do? It's not that she doesn't have someone who helps her with her homework, or tucks her in at night. Stella has her Papa and Daddy who take care of her, she just doesn't have a mom to invite to the party. Fortunately, Stella finds a unique solution to her party problem in this story about love, acceptance, and the true meaning of family.

"When Aidan Became a Brother" by Kyle Lukoff

When Aidan was born, everyone thought he was a girl. After he realized he was a trans boy, Aidan's parents helped him settle happily into his new life. Then Mom and Dad announce that they're going to have another baby, and Aidan wants to do everything he can to make things right for his new sibling, but what happens if he messes up? With a little help, Aidan comes to understand that mistakes can be fixed, and that he already knows the most important thing about being a big brother: how to love with his whole self.

"A High Five for Glenn Burke" by Phil Bildner

When sixth grader Silas Wade does a school presentation on former Major Leaguer Glenn Burke, it’s more than just a report about the irrepressible inventor of the high five. Soon he tells his best friend, Zoey, but the longer he keeps his secret from his baseball teammates, the more he suspects they know something’s up―especially when he stages one big cover-up with terrible consequences.
