The Purple Sticker Project:

Making books with positive LGBTQIA+ representation more accessible to K-12 students

"Books help validate one's identity and experience when the portrayals reflect the complexity of people's identities rather than perpetuate stereotypes."

"Diversity in Media and Why Visibility Matters," 2020, Anti-Defamation League

Introduction

The mission of this project is to make books with positive LGBTQIA+ representation more accessible to K-12 students. We are doing this by providing a continuously updated list of media with positive LGBTQIA+ representation and applying identifiable purple logo stickers to media with positive LGBTQIA+ representation in school libraries.

We chose to use a purple square on a white circle as a symbol rather than a pride flag because it is a distinctive logo, while also being discreet for students who can't openly look for LGBTQIA+ content. We are supplying libraries with informative bookmarks and posters to teach students what the stickers mean, as well as provide access to resources like this website.

About our use of the acronym LGBTQIA+

The Purple Sticker Project team chose to use the acronym LGBTQIA+ across all of our content, which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, aromantic, and all others in the community. However, some book titles, project names, and quotes that we reference use different versions of this acronym, such as LGBT, LGBTQ, and LGBTQ+. All of these mean the same thing.
