Excused Absences - Absences are excused when verified for:
Illness
Medical, dental, and optometric appointments
Funeral services of an immediate family member.
Court appearance
Pupil/Family hardship as authorized by the Administration
Observance of a holiday or ceremony of the pupil’s religion
Attendance at religious retreats
Attendance of a funeral service.
Other: with administration notification and approval
Students shall be permitted to make up missed school assignments/assessments when it is an excused absence.
Responsibility for requesting missed work lies with the student. Unless otherwise authorized, students absent up to one week have as many days to makeup work. Longer term absences require special arrangements with teachers after the first week.
Students should bring proof of excused absence to attendance office upon return to class the day following the absence.
In-School Suspension
Suspended students must be allowed to complete assignments (or be given comparable assignments). Administration and teachers work together to provide students with work while serving suspension in office.
Out of School Suspension
Suspended students may be allowed to complete assignments (or be given comparable assignments). As per ED. Code it is at the teacher’s discretion whether a student is allowed to make up the work. Responsibility for requesting missed work lies with the student.
Truancy
Students may not be absent from school without approval of the school. Truancy is defined as being absent from school without a valid excuse or being tardy without the school’s approval in excess of 30 minutes.
With each incident of truancy the student will be assigned Saturday School. Truant students may NOT be allowed to make up missed assignments or tests that were assigned during the truancy/unexcused absence.
EXCESSIVE ABSENTEEISM
Once a pupil accumulates fifteen absences (excused or unexcused) during one school year:
The student may be placed on Attendance Supervision, requiring that additional absences must be verified by a licensed medical practitioner, provided that the parent/guardian has been notified previously of the policy after the student had been absent ten days or more.
A student absent from school five or more times without the required verification will be ineligible to participate in extra-curricular activities the remainder of the school year, will not be issued a work permit or the work permit will be suspended or revoked, may be referred to SARB, and may be referred to an alternative education program.
TARDIES
The first three tardies in each class will result in consequences defined in each teacher’s classroom policies. After the 2nd tardy students need to be warned and parents need to be contacted.
Upon the third tardy in each class, the teacher may refer the student to the Assistant Principal who will assign after school detention. Failure to comply will be considered defiance of authority. Parent/Guardian will be contacted by teacher.
Continued tardies will result in additional consequences assigned by the administrator or designee. Parent/Guardian will be contacted and a conference may be held. Failure to comply will be considered defiance of authority and may result in referral to SARB.
TARDY IN EXCESS OF TEN MINUTES
If a student is tardy in excess of ten minutes but no more than 30 minutes, the teacher has the option of not allowing assignment make-up. If the student is tardy in excess of 30 minutes, he/she is truant and must obtain a re-admit slip from the office indicating “truancy.”
