Dear Parents,
I would like to introduce myself as a member of the Scotts Valley Middle School staff and welcome your child to seventh grade. I have taught in this district for many years as a seventh grade English and history teacher. I am excited to begin a year of growth and learning.
English at grade 7 has an emphasis on writing and the continued development of reading, mechanics and communication skills. The program is aligned with state standards and the Common Core national standards. Students will compose, read, analyze and practice grammar. We will share Core novels and read independently with the Newsela system. Vocabulary development will be addressed with Membean practice as well as Root Word Spelling.
The seventh grade history program consists of medieval and modern world history. Our units this year will include studies of the medieval world in Rome, the rise of Islam, Africa, China, Japan and Western Europe. Students will read, research and write regularly using texts, reference books and internet resources throughout the school year.
My expectations for my students are the following: they will develop a love of learning and sharpen their thinking skills; they will become better readers and writers, engage in a variety of challenging projects, and share their learning with others. At home, I expect all students to work for a half hour to an hour weeknights on assignments.
Please review this course syllabus. It details the requirements and content of the class. Please check your child’s daily planner for nightly assignments. Please use Illuminate to check progress. Students will be graded on homework, classwork, projects, tests and quizzes, in addition to their effort, productivity, participation, and teamwork. Please do not hesitate to contact me by email with any questions or concerns. I look forward to meeting you at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 5.
Thank You!
