In 2019, the Twin Springs students chose to focus on water quality testing. They presented a little bit about how water quality can be tested by collecting aquatic insects from the stream. They invited the 4th grade classes from Nickelsville Elementary and Dungannon Intermediate to come to Twin Springs High School to test the water quality. They also had a T-shirt design contest for the day's activities. The grant money was spent on buying T-shirts for all the kids, green team, teachers, and adult volunteers. It also paid for the kick nets, tables, ice cube trays, and plastic tweezers.
At the 2018 Clinch River Youth Summit, the main focus was water quality. The students learned about how aquatic insects can indicate water quality and how they can test it. They also learned about maple syrup, hemp, animal furs, and many other topics.
In 2018, Twin Springs mini grant proposal was chosen. The students chose to educate 3rd-5th graders on Recycling. They gave presentations at Nickelsville Elementary and Dungannon Intermediate. The grant money went toward buying paper and plastic recycling bins for all classrooms in each of our 3 feeder schools (Ft. Blackmore Primary, Dungannon Intermediate, and Nickelsville Elementary.
Twin Springs students learned about the importance of keeping their watersheds clean by demonstrating it on this Enviroscape model. The Clinch Valley Soil and Water Conservation District led this session.
The 2016 Green Team chose to promote litter education. They presented to all grades Pre-K through 7th grades at Nickelsville Elementary, K-3rd grades at Ft. Blackmore Primary, and 4th-7th grades at Dungannon Intermediate. The also facilitated an anti-litter sign contest. We asked 3rd-6th graders to come up with an Anti-Litter slogan.
