Every year in March a group of Twin Springs students attends the Clinch River Youth Summit in St. Paul, VA. While there, the students attend sessions on different environmental topics like watersheds, forestry, etc. The students also come up with a mini grant proposal. If theirs is chosen, they get up to $750 to spend toward the project which has to be aimed toward educating 3rd-5th grade students.
Twin Springs students learned about the importance of keeping their watersheds clean by demonstrating it on this Enviroscape model. The Clinch Valley Soil and Water Conservation District led this session.
Update: Hopefully recycling capabilities will be coming back to our area soon. For now, we've had to put our recycling efforts on hold until things change. Eastman's Recycling Solution article
The Green Team is responsible for the recycling bins, which are located in most rooms throughout the school. The items that are recycled are aluminum cans, plastic bottles, all paper, and cardboard. These items are then transported to the Nickelsville Solid Waste Disposal Center.
The Green Team is a part of Virginia's Adopt-A-Stream Program. As a part of this program, the green team cleans up sections of the stream at least twice a year. The Adopt-A-Stream Program has lost its funding, but the Green Team will continue their clean-up efforts. They work with the Scott County Litter Control Officer, Stacy Cookenhour, and the Scott County Animal Control Officer, Jake Dougherty. They have adopted Culbertson Branch and Valley Creek. They have also adopted the two tributaries of Culbertson Branch that our school was named for. Mrs. Addington, the Green Team sponsor, has submitted names for these unnamed tributaries to the United States Board of Geographic Names. The suggested names and data were sent to the Virginia Board of Geographic Names, and the board has accepted those names. The two streams are now named Titan Run and Mighty Branch.
