Join us virtually on Thursday, May 29th from 4-6 PM to learn about the work other students are doing at the intersection of STEAM, community action, and justice, and learn from community members about ways to get involved in their work!
Do you want to learn from other students and community members, and help brainstorm new action projects? Participation in the STEAM for Justice and Community Summit is free and only requires registration before the event. Any secondary school student (middle and high school) is invited to participate in the summit.
How to Become an Attendee
To register for the summit fill out the Registration Form and select "Option A: Attend the Event". We will send out meeting information and a detailed agenda before the event.
Do you have a project that centers on STEAM fields, community action, and justice that you want to share with other students? We are looking for students to showcase different ways to use STEAM topics/tools to serve needs and fight injustice in their local and global communities. These can include education campaigns/PSAs about harmful chemicals or factories in the area, letter-writing campaigns to legislators, fundraisers for cancer research, and much more. We are also adding an art category to our types of submissions. For more information on the projects, see the Project Info section below.
How to Become a Project Presenter
To submit your project fill out the Registration Form and select "Option B: Presenting a Project". The form will ask you to answer the following questions about your project:
Project title
Brief description
How does your project connect to STEAM?
How does your project connect to justice/community action?
We will be reviewing project submissions on a rolling basis. Projects submitted early will receive notice of acceptance to the event earlier and will have more time between the notice and the poster due date. Please keep this in mind when submitting your project.
Important dates:
Submit your project by Wednesday, May 21st
Fill out the Student Registration Form below and select "Option B: Presenting a Project" to tell us a little about the project (group member names, project title, a few sentence descriptions of the project, and how the project connects to STEAM).
We will notify those selected by Friday, May 23rd
Posters are due by Monday, May 26th
Email your poster to sep@fredhutch.org.
Present posters on Thursday, May 29th
Come to the event and present your poster!
If you have any questions about participation or have concerns about accessing the event please reach out to sep@fredhutch.org.
We are looking for student projects/examples of work at the intersection of STEAM and justice/community action. These are any project that use STEAM to combat issues in our communities. For the art portion, this would look like some art piece that brings together STEM and justice through art. This can be in the form of addressing health disparities, dismantling unjust systems/processes, or community work. The topic is broad so we can bring in a wide array of projects at this intersection.
Topics include:
Addressing health disparities (ex: increasing accessibility of health resources to multilingual communities, advocating for policy changes that could increase access to quality healthcare, etc)
Creating Public Service Announcement/Awareness Building (ex: increasing awareness about certain diseases that impact BIPOC communities, etc)
Dismantling prohibitive systems/processes (ex: advocating for policies that are harmful or restrictive like housing/zoning, pollution, etc)
Other (ex: writing email campaigns to contact local officials/councils of harmful practices)
Each poster should have a background section to explain the problem you are working to (or plan to) address, a project/proposal section about the action and why you chose this action (which could also include possible success measures), and a section about yourself (and your group mates). We also ask all submissions to have a short justice statement to demonstrate how this work brings together STEAM fields and justice/community action.
During the poster session, please be ready to have someone by the poster to give a short presentation (2-5 minutes) on your project/poster and to answer questions. This is a science fair style of event so be ready to give your short presentation a few times as people visit your poster!
What counts as a poster:
A single poster-sized slide filled out like a physical poster board (see template poster )
or
A presentation/slide deck (5 slide maximum)
This year the event will also have an art category to celebrate the amazing work we can do through art! An art project should bring together STEM (science, technology engineering, and math) and justice through art.
This can span different art mediums including but not limited to illustrations, paintings, sculptures, poetry/spoken word, song, and interpretive dance. If you are submitting poetry, spoken word, or song you can submit the piece in a written format or a video of you performing.
Each art submission should include:
The art piece itself
Either a JPEG of the art piece or a video file of the performance (if doing performance art)
The video can be uploaded to YouTube and a link to the video submitted if the file is large
An artist statement
Minimum 250 words, submitted as a Word Doc or Google Doc
Describe the submissions, what you hoped to convey through the piece, and what your intentions/inspirations were, as well as a short bio about the artist
A justice/science statement
Minimum 250 words, submitted as a Word Doc or Google Doc
Must clearly demonstrate how your submission uses art to bring together STEM, justice, and art
These are some examples from previous years that have stood out to us!
The presentations will be done in a science fair poster style. We will have two 30 minute rotations of presentations. Half of our presenters will be at their posters during a rotation to present their projects. The other half can visit other posters during this time. During the second rotation, the other half of presenters will be at their posters while the half that finished presenting can visit the other posters.
Presenters should be ready to share about their projects and answer questions from the attendees.
Please fill out the form below and indicate your preferred option for participation.
For Option B, if you are working with other students on your project, submit one form per project. A member of our team will reach out to the student via the email provided.
If you think your project or group fits this description please fill out the Student Registration Form below and select "Option B: Presenting a Project" to tell us a little about the project (group member names, project title, a few sentence description of the project, and how the project connects to STEAM). We will review project proposals on a rolling basis, sign up early!
We will reach out to eligible people about presenting during the summit. Once your proposal has been reviewed by the event team, we will reach out to coordinate the poster session. All Presenters will be awarded the '2025 Fred Hutch STEAM for Justice and Community Presenter Certificate'.
