Used to be known as Tryouts!
Winter Season Information: Dance Season starts the Monday after MEA break (at the end of October) through Mid February. There is choreography time that is allowed 2 weeks prior to first practice- this is subject to approval by coaching staff. JV/B Squad Teams will be completed after the last regular season competition of the year (normally the last weekend in January). Varsity continues on for 1-2 weeks after that up to their Section Tournament. If they are graced with the opportunity for a spot at state, then they will attend that typically the third weekend in February. Otherwise, their season ends at Sections.
To try out and participate you need to have all of the following completed before October 15th:
Application Completed: https://bit.ly/TrySCDT25
Reference Form Completed by a Teacher. https://docs.google.com/document/d/181isLevRcP4m_NKxJ6TNGjCeRDAAaOlmx1yB9fMAWE8/copy

MSHSL Form must be completed and returned to the Athletic Office
A Sports Physical is required every three years. Document must be on file with Athletic Office
Participation Feel must be paid via RevTrak or by cash/check to the school
Receive the eligibility ticket and turn in to coaches on the first day!
Tryouts (Placements) will typically take place within the 2-4 days of the season. All dancers will review skills and a small Varsity level jazz and kick combo
All dancers who try out for SCDT will make a team or be an alternate on a team. Teams are never based on age or grade, instead based on things such as skills, coachability, etc. Coaches will use a scoresheet (these will never be shared). Remember that just because you can do one or two big techniques/skills does not guarantee you a spot on a specific team. Just because you were on one level team last year, does not guarantee you a spot on the same or higher team the following. We take into consideration not only skills but other things!
Things that we look for:
Coachability
Specific Skills based on team level ( single turns vs triple or quad turns)
Turns and Turn Technique
Kicks and Kick Technique
Leap/Jumps and Technique
Memory
Confidence
Attitude
Stamina

We have three teams: Varsity, JV Black (true Junior Varsity), and JV Orange (B squad). In addition we have Jazz and Kick routines, so you could potentially be a Varsity Kick dancers and a JV Orange or JV Black Jazz dancer. Coaches will determine teams and choose how to announce it. Coaches will let you know during Welcome Week what it will look like.
No, you do not need to have dance experience! We will teach you what you will need to know. But if you are unsure and want to see some items we may as of you, please check out our prep sheet here!
Please wear form fitting athletic clothing. We request that your hair is out of your face in a bun (low, medium or high). On specific days, we will ask that all dancers wear all black clothing.
Always have your hair back in a bun, wear athletic clothing (no jeans, preference to no oversized clothing), bring dance shoes and tennis shoes, a water bottle, and if you need a light healthy snack. Highly Suggest a calendar and something to write with each day.
