Why study in Lithuania?

Lithuania is a remarkable, resurgent country, one of the three 'Baltic states' which gained independence from the Soviet Union at the start of the 1990s.  Lithuania was the first of these three separate states to regain its independence, and since then has been a notable success story.  With a cosmopolitan, outward-looking culture and a dynamic economy within the European Union, the country punches well above its weight.  

Lithuania's university sector has been a representative player in the resurgence of this country.  Universities are innovative, progressive and seek to attract students from outside the country, whilst also showcasing the best of Lithuanian intellectual activity and innovation.  

For students with Lithuanian heritage and / or citizenship, the line-up of universities forms an enviable choice, with an emphasis on quality.  For foreign students, a very strong selection of degrees taught in English at undergraduate level is an exceptionally attractive offering.  Competitive tuition fees and a high quality of life at reasonable cost add to the attraction of study in Lithuania.

Lithuania's sophisticated, historic cities are small and beautiful - perfect locations for university study.  The University of Vilnius, for example, is one of Europe's historic universities, in a UNESCO World Heritage Site city, and as inspiring a location for study as any of the other historic universities of Europe.

• Vilnius Tech - Gediminas Technical University University, Vilnius *

Prestigious public university, with historic specialisms in engineering and technology, situated in Lithuania's capital city.  A member of the ATHENA European university alliance.  The university offers a remarkably wide range of undergraduate degree options in English - see this link. *

• Vilniaus dailės akademija - Vilnius academy of arts - VDA *

A state specialist university, offering degrees in art, design, architecture, art theory and the history of art.  Four campuses: Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and Telšiai.  A specialist university, with around 1500 students.  Offers some courses entirely in English - see this link. *

• Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Kaunas *

Leading public medical university, in the city of Kaunas.  19 degree courses are offered in English, including undergraduate degrees - see this link. *

• Vytautas Magnus University - VMU, Kaunas *

Re-established in 1989, this is a university in Kaunas offering a wide range of degree courses, with a clear commitment to a liberal and democratic culture of learning and academic life.  Offers a unique undergraduate degree in Music Production, taught entirely in English - see this link. *

• Klaipėda University *

Founded in 1991, this university in the city of Klaipėda comprises three faculties: Marine Technology and Natural Sciences; Social Sciences and Humanities; Health Sciences.  The university includes two research institutes, one researching Baltic Region History and Archaeology, and the other leading in Marine Research.  A very wide range of undergraduate degrees are taught in English - see this link. *

• ISM University of Management and Economics *

Lithuania's first private university, with a strong focus on international students, and based in Vilnius.  Undergraduate degrees in business, economics, finance, entrepreneurship, and marketing; graduate options include an MBA and doctoral programmes.  The majority of courses are available in English.  Double degree awards with partner universities in other European countries - see this link. *
