Introduction to this site

This website is designed to help our students and their families find the information and guidance they need as they consider the idea of university study.

Choosing a university is one of the most important decisions in life, and whilst not all of our students will necessarily go on directly to university once they leave school, most will, and so this guide is intended to support that majority of our students by exploring the main questions and showing where to find out more online.

Choosing the right university can be a complex business, not least because there’s an overwhelming quantity of information online which aims to guide students and their families in making university choices.  Additional to that is a further mass of information and promotional material provided by all the individual universities.

This guide aims to pick up the key themes and to show you where to find essential information.  It’s not a guide to absolutely everything, but it is a guide we have written for the students in our Trust schools and their families to help them get started on the exciting journey of thinking about university.

Our guide emphasises that the most important thing is to be aware of the range of university courses available.  Choosing a university well is a process of matching the individual student to the best university course for that student, rather than thinking only in terms of a rank-order of ‘good’ and ‘less good’ universities.

The course must therefore fit the student.  That is the important topic to address.

So, the big questions we want to help our students to explore are:

Our website is arranged to lead students and families to the key information they need.  We have included many hyperlinks to carefully selected websites which will help you to learn more.

There's a section specifically aimed at students and another which addresses questions typically asked by families or sponsors.

We're also creating a series of short video talks on key topics connected with applying to university.  These are indicated throughout the website by hyperlinks to YouTube.  These videos are addressed to students and parents alike, and aim to inspire a creative approach to thinking about university study.

In due course, this site will provide more specific information about the process of application to universities.  Currently, this information is provided via hyperlinks to relevant external sites.  In particular, the Unifrog * website (a subscription site to which British School students are subscribed) contains comprehensive information about application processes to universities in a wide variety of countries.

Please let us know your feedback on the website - it's a work in progress, and we are keen to hear your thoughts on what you like about it, and what you think could be improved or added.
