Located at the crossroads of Bushwick and Williamsburg, IS 318 Eugenio Maria de Hostos serves a large and diverse student body. The school offers a wide array of enrichment opportunities, from robotics and art to cooking, sports, and nearly 50 after-school programs. Its inclusive approach ensures that all students—regardless of ability—participate in school-wide events like the science fair.
IS 318 provides honors and general education classes, up to four Regents-level courses, and test prep for the Specialized High School Admissions Test, with many students earning admission. A Quality Review praised the school for challenging high-achievers while ensuring all students feel included.
Special education services at IS 318 include team-teaching classes that blend general and special education students, as well as smaller self-contained classrooms for those who need more intensive support. A relatively high percentage of students with disabilities are enrolled in self-contained settings.
Admissions to the general program are open to District 14 students, while the nationally recognized chess program accepts applicants from across Brooklyn. Both programs consider 4th grade scores and report cards; the chess program also includes a skills assessment and is more selective.
*Notably, rapper and media mogul Jay-Z attended IS 318 in the early 1980s and has credited a teacher there for inspiring his love of language.
