Welcome to the Advanced STEM Research Class!
The following are the draft storyboards of the Habitat Monitoring App.
Seawall Park
The Habitat Monitoring app is designed to serve as both a tour guide app for park visitors and a habitat monitoring app for citizen scientists. It provides educational info through engaging activities and collects habitat data through games. Audio tour can be enabled by pressing the “headphone” button. There are four navigation buttons that users can choose to explore the park.
Climate Change (Educational info)
Shorelines Protection (Educational info)
Seawall Habitat (Educational info)
Game Time (Habitat monitoring)
Climate Change
Based on historical data and scientific predictions to illustrate the challenges we are facing together.
Coastal Community
What are the impacts of hurricane Sandy to the NYC coastal community? Users will learn the facts through a series of Q&A and visual aids.
Sea Level Rise
What will be the impacts of sea level rise to NYC in the years to come? How many areas and how much population will be affected? Users will learn the facts through an interactive map.
Storm Surge
What will be the impacts of storm surge to NYC? An interactive map will be used to explore the answer.
Find Your Flood Risk
Users can enter their addresses and view their flood risks.
Shorelines Protection
Information about shorelines protection will be provided to visitors through interactive ways.
Protection Structure
Various types of protection structures will be introduced through matching game, and their strengths and limitations will be explained.
Design Your Structure
Users can select the shapes and dimensions of the seawall and view the protection effects of their design through simulation.
Ecological Impact
The ecological impact of traditional hard protection structure will be introduced through Q&A.
Eco-Friendly Design
The unique design of the seawall park will be explained.
Seawall Habitat
Visitors can explore the seawall habitat through the cameras of their own mobile devices or the streaming of the underwater camera in the seawall park.
Explore Habitat
When app users press the “Info On” button, marine species recognition function will be activated. The names and relevant info of the species will be overlay on top of the video.
Underwater Live Camera
Visitors can view the live underwater scenes near the seawall through the streaming from the underwater cameras of the park.
Game Time
Play scavenger hunt game to match seawall patterns, find marine species, and answer questions within time limit. Timer will be activated once the “Start Playing” button is pressed. Total score will be calculated automatically and displayed in the leaderboard. Player’s contributions as citizen scientists will be explained and recognized.
Matching Seawall Pattern
Randomly generated seawall patterns will be overlayed on top of the camera view. Players gain scores when close matches happen.
Finding Marine Species (Crab & Crab)
Questions of randomly generated marine species will be posted, and players find them through the camera of their mobile devices.
Leaderboard
Show player’s score in the leaderboard and explain their scientific contributions.
