Grading Scales:
Student grades are evaluative and descriptive tools that help communicate what they learned.
Student mastery is reflected in the following performance levels:
Level 4: Excels in Standards (Above grade level)
90% and above
Level 3: Proficient (On grade level)
89% - 73%
Level 2: Below Standards (Approaching grade level)
72% - 56%
Level 1: Well Below Standards (Far below standards)
Below 55%
Grades for Art will have designations of: Pass (P) (65-100) or Fail (F) (64-1)
Grades for Academic and Personal Behaviors will have designations of:
Excellent (E) Good (G) Satisfactory (S) Needs Improvement (N)
Report Cards
Report cards will be distributed three times a year (November, March, June).
In the rare situation that a student has not had the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the course content and skills due to extenuating circumstances, NYC Public Schools may award one of following special marks as a grade on the Report Card:
New or Recently Admitted Students:
Students who enroll in school after it has started may have missed assignments or assessments needed to generate a complete course grade for a given marking period. These students may be given a grade of ‘NL’ to indicate this circumstance. In addition, ‘NL’ may be given in cases where there is insufficient information to determine whether a student has met standards.
English Language Learner (ELL) Students:
For ELL students, the grading policy will consider the student’s English as a New Language (ENL) proficiency level, and will include opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery of the NYSED Learning Standards in their native language.
Students with Disabilities (SWD) Students:
Students with disabilities receive progress reports on their annual goals. Progress reports are distributed at the same time as report cards and reflect the likelihood that a student will meet their annual goals or has already met their annual goals. Progress reports do not replace report cards for students with disabilities.
Considerations for Student Progress & Improvement:
Throughout the school day, students will have the opportunity to improve their proficiency level.
This might include:
complete missing work
revise assignments
show evidence of what they know and can do, rather than completion of a specific task
