Magic Crystal Orbs

3rd graders ponder on the question on what moments can shape the future. They wrote down their future predictions and plan their orb design.

To further elaborate on their imaginative idea, we revisited the visual elements of shapes and lines. We also learned how to interpret the color wheel. They mixed their own color schemes. If done early, they then experiment on hand placement to complete their composition.

Kusama ¨Eye-Dentity¨

In celebration, of Mental Health Awareness month and Asian-American Heritage Month, class 4-221 studied Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama.

I conducted an experiment on perception based on looks alone versus learning about the artist life story. How does the first impression shift when the students learn more about the artist?

This was to internalize the idea that we should listen to each other thoughts first rather than assuming what a person is experiencing.

Here is an example of a student's thoughts.

Students used origami paper (in respect to Japanese culture) and with the key features of Kusama's eyes artwork, they designed their own "eye-dentity" based on who they are and what is important to them (i.e.: interests, family, beliefs and values).

Joanna Goodman Protraits and Identity Mapping

5th grade mapped out their identity to ponder on what makes them who they are. From there, we studied New Yorker Artist Joanna Goodman to learn how to collage our portrait with visual imagery of our identity. Students experiment with outfit and background layout from various magazines scraps.

No Food Waste Pot Luck

What can be done that brings both the world and our community stronger? One way is having a Pot Luck! Class 3-217 created a pot luck by re-using scrap paper and 3-D paper sculputing techniques to cook up their own dish to the pot luck.

A few of the techinques used are: crumple, fringe, tear, roll, fold and twist

The comparison of using paper scraps to food scraps should be made here! Instead of disgarding your leftovers, what will you bring to the table?

Here, I posted two videos. One explaining about the issue of food waste and another by of a possible solution.

Poetry Month

In continuation of last month of compassion, April Is Poetry Month so below first graders formed two poems based on our discussion how and when we show love without saying the word love.

Love is ______

A hug

Family

A gift

For everyone

Sharing

Bringing joy

Nice to many

Holding hands

How you treat someone

Giving

Protecting

Beautiful .

Show love …

When someone helps you.

When someone feels sad.

When feeling lonely.

When someone gets hurt.

When someone shows you love and kindness.

Bengali New Year

"pohela boishakh "

April 14th is the Bengali New Year!

In recongition of this hoilday, 3rd graders practiced cultural senstivity when learning about Bangladesh's folk art and tradtions. Common traditions to celebrate is a parade held with representations of animals and clay dolls.

As well as rice with fried fish, pepper and a variety of bhorta ( mashed vegetable, meat or fish with onions, pepper, perhaps garlic and mustard oil).

Third graders used paper to form into 3-D owl mask by manipulating the paper to bend and keep the rounded shape. They also formed their own patterns using lines, and shapes.

To say Happy New year:

"শুভ নববর্ষ "

"Surbo Nobo Borsho"

Song on the New Year:

( I enjoy this version of the song and  English Subtitles are shown)

March 2024

Here at P.S 008 we celebrated Women's History month and No Bullying "How to Say no."

Ramandan Kameen for those who celebrates it.

Ton Schulten

5th graders completed their cityscape based on the Dutch Artist Ton Schulten. They used a ruler to form a grid, precisely 1in X 1in . They designed the buildings by laying out geometric shapes. Later used tints, hues and shades to their lively buildings.  This work has been submitted to the Bronx Art Festival. Hoping for good news!

" I am Love"

On the premise of Compassion to go against Bullying, first graders had a read-aloud of the novel " I AM LOVE a book of compassion" By Susan Verde and art by Peter H Reynolds.

First graders discussed how and when they show love without stating the words " I love you". Students created statements what love is based on the read aloud.

They are currently completing their protrait holding their love note to show compassion to those who needs love.

The Moon and the Stars

4th graders are forming their own story about the moon and stars.  They formed their composition to set the ground for the story, inspired from the illustrator, Roberto Weigand, using thumbnail ideas and T.A.G ( a system to give feedback to one another).

 Women's Athletes

3rd graders are continuing their unit on movement. For women's history month, (previous learned about Kaori Sakamoto) I introduced Surya Bonaly, who is a retired olympic figure skater who made history in 1998 to do a back flip and land on one foot.

Students kept in mind of their observation of gesture poses onto their leg, knee and skate placement. Furthermore, 3rd graders are familarized with tying laces and use of hole punchers.

         Mildred Thompson

Art Club Students discussed what, where and who you are connected to? Based on her exhibition " Magnetic Fields".

more info about her!

Moe Brooker

Based on MTA LIRR WYANDANCH "Just Jazz"

First graders created a faux stained glass window based on Moe Brooker's 28 panel installation. He is inspired by his grandmother making quilts and the Black church.

More information on the process on "Just Jazz"

Faith Ringgold

She grew up in Harlem, NYC. Her deisre to vocalize her thoughts led to her painted story quilts, mixing fabric and painting. First graders based their project on " Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles, 1991", which features black women activists doing a quilting bee.

Original Work of her Quilt

January 2024

Happy New Year P.S 008 Community!  Starting something new can be challenging but I wish all the best on whatever resolutions you have for this year!

Gesture Figure Drawings

On the premise of ice skaters performances. 3rd graders initial focus was on World Champ Kaori Sakamoto performance at Canada's short program, how she creates movements by utilizing all parts of her body. By replicating and creating their own, they drew and commented on eachothers gesture drawings!

Bird-Eye View Snow People

4th graders observed and exercised how bird eye point of view changes and distorts the perception of a subject.

We looked at Photographies of cultural landmarks such as Zhivopisny Bridge) to discuss the change and how that will affect the layout of our snowperson.

Furthermore, they used chalk pastels and blend to diffused the colors and used radial balance for their scarf to imitate that the scarf is being wrapped around the snowperson.

Hot Cocoa

3rd graders learned that a folk artist such as Heather Galler are not trained in an art school, like any artist, she took time to observe and practice their skill set. Based on her contemporary work, students formed their custom background, cup, saucer, handle with line work throughout.

December 2023

Many festivities happened, this month. I hope you were able to stop by family night to watch our winter art festival!

This month we were part of the District 10 Art Festival! Our Bubble Blanket was accepted!

Down below are what we are working on for this month.

Snowy Night

We discussed about the medium we were using, charcoal. What is the source and process to create artist grade charcoal? By charring  wood! So in a way, we were using a part of a tree to draw a tree!

Students showcased their use of value with charcoal ( for dark value) and (light value), chalk and mid-value as the gray paper itself.

Ornaments

We had our first graders and Art club create their own ornaments for the CB 7 Annual Tree Lighting.

✨✨✨✨

Warm Candles

With the nights getting longer and the weather getting cooler, we need warmth.

Third and first graders worked on on belly breathing ( by blowing out candles as an analogy) to practice mindfulness and think of what we need.

Students experiemented using oil pastels to blend and layer colors to create their own candle designs, parts of candle and observing features of a candle flame.

November 2023

Respect for all Contest

Submission  for the DOE "Respect for all Contest" done by  2nd/3rd and 4th/5th grade art club.

The title is "Spread the Respect".

The reason of this burger concept is because although the ingredients are so vastly different in color, texture and other characteristics, together they work phenomenally and enjoyable to be respectful and to spread these ideas and practices.
Although the theme was respect, keep in mind this entire process was done through collaboration and cooperation too!

Knitting and Weaving Workshop

In preperation to the  upcoming winter festival, some 4th and 5th grade class created knitting scarfs. Students re-imagined everyday objects to make believe as textile art. Students learned the key differences between knitting and weaving.

Update regarding Armadillos and Mola

Most 3rd grade classes are completing their three banded armadillo! They learned how to properly handle brushes and paint. Most 4th grades are near finalizing their Mola designs. Some students discussed how it was challenging to ultilize a ruler and were surprisined to see math and art being connected.

October 2023

Joan Miró

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, 1st graders learned about the elements of lines and shapes to form their own characters based on the Spanish Artist Joan Miró.

Oil-Resist

Armadillos

3rd graders started off their project of a Three-Banded Armadillo, native to Brazil.

Students then learn about Alebrijes from Mexico. They are used in Dia de los Muretos celebrations too. Using oil pastels and watercolor to resist the oil pastel lines. Alebrijes are special because no two are ever alike!

Mola

4th and 5th grades are learning about the tradition of Mola (means "shirt"). This is a textile art from Panama for the Kuna Women. Key feature of molas are their bold color contrast and layers of sewing fabric.

Students brainstormed for their own design in their sketch book and contining to refer to their choices in their work.

SEPTEMBER 2023

As a collaborative project to kick off the year on the theme of connection and reflecting what we have ( in the name of art and science theory !), we created the Bubble Cell Blanket.

   Bubble Cell Blanket , 2023

P.S 008 Issac Varian 1st,3rd 4th and 5th Grades

Mixed media on paper (crayon, pencils and markers)

PS 008 students reflected on two creative works that emphasize how the universe is all connected even though it is extremely varied. The works included visual artist Marla Varner's blanket, Tiny Bubbles and Karen Krossing's novel One Tiny Bubble. Varner said she quilted and connected many different tiny bubbles into a blanket during the pandemic to occupy herself while she felt isolated from life while she was confined to her own small bubble. In Krossing's story of L.U.C.A (last common universal ancestor) the author explored the theory of a single cell leading to the presence of bacteria, animals, plants, etc. Each PS 008 student was challenged to create their own tiny bubble cell containing something personal which was united to produce this collaborative work of art.
