Over the past 18 months, the Office of Arts and Special Projects developed learning sequences (of 4 to 6 lessons each) for all four grade bands. In these sequences, the overview and the introduction are teacher-facing. Each individual lesson is student-facing. Students may follow them independently and they were used by teachers to enhance instruction. See Weeks 1 to 13.
SPECIAL NOTE: Although these sequences were developed for remote instruction, they are excellent resources to help you develop onsite instruction.
Reflecting and building upon the work they did during the 2020-2021 school year and their vast experiences prior to the pandemic, four exemplary visual arts educators created vibrant units to share with the field. For this first round of units, you will find Susan Bricker's unit on self-portrait collage for K-2, and a sculpture unit for grades 3-5. Lara Tyson created a unit for middle school students on digital Surrealism, and Maria Bonilla created a unit for high school students on collage.

Through a grant from New York Community Trust, Studio in a School NYC in collaboration with the Office of Arts and Special Projects NYCDOE, has created a series of remote learning resources. These resources contain student-facing videos and slides that serve two purposes; the videos and slides may be used by teachers to support in-person and remote instruction and may be used by students as they work independently outside of school. See Weeks 14 to 34.

Art educator, Craig Kane created a series of videos that may be used for asynchronous and in person learning. They may be used to introduce lessons or to frame the discussion at the beginning of a longer unit. View the videos and then enjoy sharing them with your students in ways that fit into your instructional plans.

This resource demonstrates the alignment of the NYCDOE Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Visual Arts to the New York State Standards of Visual Arts. It was developed by exemplary DOE visual arts educators and covers each of the five strands in Benchmark grades 2, 5, 8, and 12.
The documents are complementary instructional supports. The NYCDOE Blueprint is a curricular guide identifying key content and skills. The NYS Standards provide a conceptual framework of artistic processes and enduring understandings, the keystones of excellent arts instruction. Both documents offer unique lenses through which to reflect on planning, instruction, and assessment of student learning.
This sample syllabus for an introductory Visual Arts course offers sample units of study with suggested time frames. It is adaptable for ½ (one semester) or 1 unit (whole year) of arts credit.
