Citywide Professional Learning Series
2021-2022
2021-2022
As we embark on the journey of rebuilding, we seize this unique moment to revisit and reassess how we design learning experiences that nurture and inspire the artistic voice of our students. Reconnecting as a community of music educators, we acknowledge the challenges of the present and recent past as well as the growth and opportunities that have emerged, and we support each other in sharing, exploring, and defining a path forward. Together we examine instructional resources and repertoire with fresh perspective as we continue striving toward more equitable and inclusive music classrooms. Importantly, we consider ways to intentionally design lessons that keep identity and meaning making at the center of our work while we help our students regain technical skill and rediscover their confidence through in-person group music making and performance. Grounded in the principles of Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education (CR-SE), this year’s Citywide Music Professional Learning sessions charge us to:
BUILD community and develop leadership skills among music teachers, recognizing our diverse backgrounds, training, and unique perspectives.
SUPPORT student wellness and social-emotional learning by building trusting communities in our classrooms that nurture students’ diverse identities as individuals and as musicians.
EXAMINE how we plan and teach to further anchor our work in equity and positive mindsets that honor what students already bring to the table.
FOSTER student exploration of performance technique, songwriting, and multiple literacies that support their creative expression.
CULTIVATE student agency by examining the historical, cultural, and social roles of music and musicians in society and their relevance to our students.
LEVERAGE newly acquired technology skills to customize the learning experience, foster collaboration, and provide new resources for teachers and students.
