One part of my classroom management plan is using seating charts. My students are separated in groups of four or five total. Those groups of four can break into groups of two-three for quick turn and talks, think-pair-shares, and for really quick group work. After the short group work is completed, the pairs turn back to the other two or three students in their group and share out again to get more information they may have missed. I form my group based on formal and informal assessments. I also form them based off of classroom observations. If I find that a student is not motivated in their group, or becoming too distracted, I am able to move them into a group that would allow that student to focus.
As seen in the image to the left, the desks are in "grouped rows." Each group consists of four desks, which allows the students to have discussions in pairs as well as groups of four.
Ticket Reward System
For classes that struggle with behavioral issues, I have implemented a ticket reward system. If a student has done well behaviorally on a particular day or has actively participated on a specific day, they earn one ticket. 10 tickets can be turned in for a homework pass. This is a technique that I have only had to utilize a few times. Those few times, however, the tickets really seemed to motivate the students to do better academically and behaviorally.
