Why Having Books At Home Matters, and How To Get Free Books in Brooklyn!
Books in a home are essential to literacy and have proven effective in raising student literacy scores. “'Adolescent exposure to books is an integral part of social practices that foster long-term cognitive competencies,' wrote Joanna Sikora." This means, books and reading help your child think and learn more efficiently and critically. In fact, according to this same study (link below) having books in the home versus not having books in the home has led to a child to be "3.2 years further in education." So I encourage you to have books in the home beyond the ones your child takes from the school library.

BOOKS CAN BE EXPENSIVE THOUGH! And I know sometimes money is tight; however, there are many places to acquire free books that are appropriate to your child' reading interest and level. The main one is BROOKLYN BOOK BODEGA (link below). They offer free books, as many as you can carry, and appear at events around Brooklyn, including in East New York! This month alone, there will be several, so bring a bag, a cart, or even a wheelbarrow (ha) and load up on some good reads!
