Best for explicit vocabulary instruction for all students
(Cloud, Genesee, & Hamayan, 2000) - A vocabulary strategy which can be used before, during or after reading text. Given a list of words, students try to identify connections between any two words on the list and explain the rationale.
Strategy Instructions
During the planning process, the teacher makes two lists of words that pertain to the content and texts to be used in the lesson. The two lists are distinct but have varied connections to one another via the content.
During the lesson, the teacher places the two lists of words on the board or smart board..
Students are asked to make connections between a word on the first list and a word on the second list and they must explain the reason for the connection that they made.
This activity is not a matching column. The students are asked to make verbal or written statements as to why they believe there is a connection between the two words appearing on the separate lists.
