New York and Brooklyn Public library

The New York Public Library has locations in the boroughs of The Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. The boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are supported by their own separate library systems.

Brooklyn and Queens residents are still welcome to apply for a New York Public Library card.

Additionally, as a courtesy to other New York City library users, Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Library cardholders may use their existing card, once it is linked to The New York Public Library. Visit any NYPL location in person to link your card.

Please note that materials borrowed from The New York Public Library branches cannot be returned at the Brooklyn Public Library or Queens Library, and materials borrowed from the Brooklyn and Queens systems cannot be returned to New York Public Library locations.

Since its founding in 1895, The New York Public Library has unwaveringly served New York City, no matter the circumstances.  Our local libraries play a key role in closing the digital divide, especially for the millions of New Yorkers who don’t have internet access at home. New York City public school students rely on their local branches for homework help. The city’s immigrant communities count on NYPL’s English language and literacy classes. Job seekers depend on our comprehensive job search resources. Altogether, the Library offers hundreds of thousands of free programs annually, serving everyone from toddlers to teens to seniors.

Today the Library’s 92 locations include four research centers—focusing on the humanities and social sciences, the performing arts, Black history and culture, and business and industry—and a network of neighborhood libraries throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

Brooklyn Public Library is pleased to present The Book of HOV, an installation created by Roc Nation to celebrate the life and work of Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter. One of Brooklyn's most influential figures, JAY-Z has shaped and consistently redefined hip-hop, music and culture on a global scale. The Book of HOV features never-before-seen images, art and ephemera from the artist's archives, providing an unparalleled look at an extraordinary life and career. December 4 is the last day to view this exhibit.

In 1977, it became the first public library in the nation to provide comprehensive programs and services for new Americans, and now has a vast digital and written collection that includes sources of information in over 200 languages.

At all the libraries, students can access Brainfuse HelpNow which offers personalized academic assistance in core subjects (math, reading, writing, science), a 24/7 Writing Lab, academic content and practice tests for skills-building (including SAT preparation), and much more. Live tutoring from Brainfuse experts is available from 2:00 PM - 11:00 PM EST.
