This year in dance class...

In the first half of the year, students will be learning about the most fundamental technique in dance...ballet! Each grade will begin by studying the history and characteristics of ballet: why it was created, who performed ballet, how is it used today, and why is it such an important technique?

4th Grade

The Nutcracker

In the fourth grade, students will be learning about the fundamentals of ballet technique. In addition, they will study how ballet is used to tell different stories. By the end of their unit, students will learn and perform of variation from George Balanchine's "The Nutcracker" to practice how ballet tehcnique is used as a performance.

6th Grade

Create a Ballet Tutorial


In the sixth grade, students will learn about the origins of ballet technique in addition to practicing the key elements and skills of the ballet style. Students will work to choreograph their own ballet combination that will be taught and performed by a classmate. Students will film a "Ballet Tutorial" for their partner. Through this project students will experience what it is like as a choreographer to create original work.

7th Grade

Ballet Solos


In the seventh grade, students will learn about ballet technique and composition. Students will work on their ballet vocabulary in addition to how ballet is used to create performances. Students will use their ballet vocabulary to choreogaph their own ballet solo that will be performed for their peers.

8th Grade

Build A Ballet


In the eight grade, students will use the history, technique, and performance elements of dance to build their own ballet. Students will develop ballet technique in addition to learning about popular ballet works. Using various parts of production, students will design their own ballet concept, music, costuming, and choreography.
