The History of Baseball
Baseball evolved in the mid-19th century from older English bat-and-ball games like rounders and cricket, eventually becoming a structured sport in the United States. The Knickerbocker Rules, established in 1845 by Alexander Cartwright, laid the foundation for the modern game, including the diamond-shaped infield. By the early 20th century, the formation of the American and National Leagues solidified baseball as America's "national pastime." The sport’s history is also marked by significant social milestones, most notably Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in 1947, integrating the Major Leagues.
Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. He sought to create an indoor game to keep men physically fit during the winter. The first ever basketball game was played on December 21 1891. Dr. Naismith used a soccer ball and peach baskets and nailed them to the gym ten feet high. They played with nine players, but teams of five were standard. Also, basketball became nationwide in Canada and other parts of the world. Men and women both played, while it became a popular informal outside game. Also, U.S. Serviceman in World War II popularized the sport than anywhere in the nation. Between 1893 and 1895 U.S. colleges adopted this new game of basketball. Some of the first college basketball games took place in New York City's Madison Square Garden. By the 1950s, basketball had become a major college basketball sport. From a soccer ball and peach baskets, to a full on highly accelerating sport.
