Ceramics WOW

Time: E Period; Tuesday 12:30-2/ Thursday 12:30-2

Location: Bernard Leach

Welcome to Ceramics Wow! This course is designed for those new to working with clay. Over the trimester, you’ll learn the foundational techniques of hand-building, including pinching, coiling, and slab construction. We’ll explore the basics glazing and kiln firing. Once we are able to build sufficiently, we will introduce the nerikomi technique into our repertoire.  You’ll gain an understanding of the properties of clay and develop a vocabulary to describe your work and processes.  Throughout the course, we’ll engage in creative projects that encourage experimentation and personal expression. You’ll also learn how to easily document your work for social media. No prior experience is required—just bring your enthusiasm and creativity. Together, we'll play with clay and learn new skills along the way!

Evaluation is based on attendance, engagement, completion of assignment, and your final portfolio.

Students will also be required to be active participants in class discussions, regularly take photos and upload them to drive to show progress.  Collaboration is encouraged and students will have opportunities to work in small groups to join together on a few assignments and critiques.  Over the three trimesters, students touch upon many aspects of Art making, as the class is both a place for critical thinking and problem-solving but also one for joyous creativity.

 Behavior Expectations

Cell phones can be used to look up images or to listen to music on headphones but consistent dipping into social media will limit one's phone privledges.  Clay work can be dirty, so it's best to leave devices covered so they may retain their integrity.
