Binge eating is a behavior that usually begins in teenagers and young adults, but children can develop it too. It’s defined by consuming an unusually large amount of food in a short period of time, but binge eating is also characterized by a feeling of losing control. Someone binge eating feels they can’t stop. This is important to note because in children, this zoned-out feeling is often the first sign of disordered eating. Recognizing it may allow us to get kids help before they develop full-blown binge-eating disorder and unhealthy weight gain.
