Mono printing is unique, because there can only be one of its kind unlike other printing processes!
One way to create this monoprint process is to ink your printing plate and then wipe away the white/ positive areas to remove the ink.
Using lots of layers, stencils, and stamps with fluid acrylic paint and a Gelli Plate, we can create unique beautiful monoprints.
By using gel mediums, acrylic paint, tape, and wintergreen oil we can practice non traditional transfer methods.
Students will etch into plexiglass using exacto or etching needles to create grooves and indents. After the plexiglass has enough texture and graphic lines etched into it, students will rub ink into the grooves and then print with extreme pressure and damp paper going through the printmaking press.
This is similar to historically significant wood/wax block printing on fabric in many places around the world like traditional African and Indonesian prints. Different cultures have different names for this process; but it all relates to printing a repeated design onto fabric either using hot wax, ink, or fabric paint.

Students will cut out the positive spaces of their design so that spray paint or sponged on paint can go through the removed areas leaving ink behind where the cut out was. Typically these areas are removed with an exacto knife and very thick posterboard or plastic is the material for the stencil. New technology with vinyl cut out (Cricket) types of machines or die cut machines can also work to remove the stencil. Stencils can be attached to a silk screen to push screen ink onto fabric or they can be used directly on the surface to print on with spray paint.
