The following information should be used as a general pacing guide for the course. More information will be added as we go through the year. Â
***Students are enrolled in Comp 2 at the same time to use the class time to work on these assignments. Assignment grades will be divided as evenly as possible between the 2 courses in my gradebook. For example 2 of the mini art projects will go into the AP2D course gradebook and 2 of the mini art projects will go into the Comp 2 course gradebook.  Â
-Our first week of class will consist of building community within our classroom, getting to know each other and looking through my own portfolio as well as yours and your classmates portfolios. Be prepared to share your summer assignment with the class.
-We will preview past AP portfolio submissions and look closely at how they were graded and why. First, we need to get an understanding on the expectations for the course and our (flow and) pacing of assignments for the year. Â
-We will discuss investigating, researching, brainstorming, creating work, and submitting a portfolio. Â
-I expect lots of questions from each of you, so please make sure you join in the conversation. If you are wondering something, a fellow classmate most likely has a similar question.
Here are a few short assignments to expect within the first 6 weeks of class:
-"Art Critic" Describe how you see the elements and principles in a piece of work. What makes it successful? Use descriptive writing and examples from your work.
-"Research from a Book?!" Find an artist book in the classroom to answer the questions about the artist.Â
-"Explore and Report" Use art websites such as colossal magazine or Art 21 and find 3 artists that you find interesting. Create a 1 page slide for each artist using Google Slides and show your findings to the class. This will help create an enormous "bank" of artists that we can all use to inspire our art-making.Â
-"Free Write" We will do this once to twice a week as a time for reflection after learning about artists or after working on a project. Your free write sections need to be kept in a section of your sketchbook. Make sure you always start your free write with the date! I will be checking for these and will need to see that you did them on the dates I requested.  The free write process is so important for developing your INQUIRY and you will come back to these notes later when you have to write your 1200 character written statement.Â
-Mini Art projects (2 day art projects) These activities are meant to be a fun, explorative exercise in getting you to experiment with different media, techniques, and ideas. Many students come up with their inquiry while working on these Mini Art projects.  Students will be graded with 2 CW grades for each mini art project; 1 CW grade will demonstrate the documentation process and 1 CW grade is the final artwork.
"Miniature World" Creating a photographic narrative through imagery.
         "Slogan Generator"
"Surface Manipulation/ Altered Surfaces" Exploring media in a layered process
"Encyclopedia Day" Topic of your choice leads to research and art making
Presentation for "Art Critic"Â
What makes a good composition? What are key elements of a good composition? Can you be an "art critic"? After reviewing elements and principles of art in class and taking notes on good compositional choices, students will find a piece of art to analyze and explain what makes it have a good composition.Â
Find at least 10 images that show off the style and techniques that you like and other artists/things that inspire you. Make sure at least two artist are from the AP Art Digital Exhibits and two famous artists. Check out our Explore and Report presentations for ideas on famous artists.Â
There are wonderful visual resources all around us in the classroom!  Students will select a book in class that focuses on an artist to answer questions from a worksheet. Make sure to look at many of the artist's artworks in the book and include a final response that explores your opinion about the artist's style and techniques. Â
