ASSIGNMENT
In this project, students will explore the theme of consumerism and its impact on society through a post-apocalyptic cityscape. They will choose two or more prominent companies that are prevalent in today’s society and imagine these companies as competing factions in a dystopian future where they have risen to power. The resulting conflict between these factions causes global destruction, and students will visually represent the aftermath in their artwork.

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Understand the impact of consumerism and corporate influence on society, and incorporate these ideas into a visual narrative.
Create a detailed post-apocalyptic cityscape in which two companies have become dominant factions, each with distinct visual identities and influence on the environment.
Use digital tools (e.g., layers, blending modes, textures) to create a compelling and realistic environment, integrating architectural elements and thematic visuals that represent the factions.
Demonstrate advanced digital illustration techniques including composition, lighting, and atmosphere to enhance the emotional tone and message of the piece.
Develop visual storytelling skills by incorporating symbolism and thematic elements that represent consumerism, corporate power, and societal collapse.
How does consumerism and corporate power influence the way we perceive society and the environment?
What techniques can be used to visually represent the dominance of corporate factions in a post-apocalyptic world?
How can a cityscape be designed to convey the destructive effects of consumerism while also telling a narrative through its environment?
How can digital tools be used to enhance atmosphere and emotion in a dystopian scene?
Consumerism as a Driving Force: In today's society, companies wield tremendous influence over culture, politics, and the environment. In this project, students will explore the consequences of unchecked consumerism in a dystopian future.
Visual Storytelling through Environment: A post-apocalyptic cityscape can communicate a lot about the factions, their ideologies, and the world they inhabit. Students will create a narrative through architecture, lighting, and object placement.
Futuristic Design and Faction Identity: The two companies must be represented through unique visual identities—whether through logos, color schemes, architecture, or other branding elements. Each faction will visually transform the cityscape in line with its values and agenda.
Composition and Mood: The use of light, shadow, and perspective will be crucial in setting the emotional tone of the scene. Students will focus on how these elements contribute to the larger narrative of destruction and power.
Consumerism: The cultural and economic influence of large corporations that drive the demand for products and services, often leading to environmental, social, and political consequences.
Dystopia: An imagined society where the conditions of life are extremely poor, often due to totalitarian control, environmental collapse, or societal degradation.
Faction: A group or entity with a particular ideology or goal, often competing with others for power or control.
Post-apocalyptic: A genre that explores the aftermath of a catastrophic event that has devastated society, leaving the world in ruin and disarray.
Visual Storytelling: The use of imagery, composition, and symbolism to convey a narrative without relying on text or spoken word.
Symbolism: The use of images, colors, or objects to represent larger ideas or concepts, such as power, consumerism, or destruction.
Composition: The arrangement of visual elements in an artwork, determining the flow and organization of the scene.
Atmosphere: The overall mood or feeling evoked by an artwork, often influenced by lighting, color, and texture.
