When trying to decide an event to compete in, you should first look at what clusters interest you the most. DECA has five competitive clusters to choose from:
Business Management + Administration
Marketing
Finance
Hospitality + Tourism
Entrepreneurship
Business Management & Administration teaches you to be the mastermind behind smooth operations! You’ll need strong communication, organization, and decision-making skills to handle tasks like managing teams or streamlining business processes. Roleplays and exams in this cluster might have you focus on business law, human resources, and community service.
Marketing is all about turning creativity into cash flow! You’ll learn how to influence consumers, analyze market trends, implement promotional plans, and create advertising campaigns. Roleplays and exams center around skills in communication, promotion strategies, and brand management.
Finance helps you master the art of managing money! Focused on banking, investments, and budgeting, this cluster sharpens your analytical skills, attention to detail, and ethical decision-making. You might tackle roleplays and exams involving accounting principles, investment evaluations, or balancing company budgets.
Hospitality and Tourism trains interpersonal skills and innovative problem solving! Focusing on hotels and travel, this cluster requires a creative mind, prioritizing customer service, and the ability to pitch an event. In H&T, roleplays and events could relate to consulting for a travel agency, dealing with an angry customer, or introducing new menu items.
Entrepreneurship lets you unleash your inner innovator! This cluster is all about generating ideas, assessing risk, and turning dreams into reality. You’ll need to be adaptable, resourceful, and skilled at spotting opportunities. Roleplays might include pitching a business idea, solving startup challenges, or strategizing for growth.
If the idea of competing against seasoned DECA veterans sounds a little intimidating, choose a Principles event! With introductory events in all 5 clusters, Principles is perfect (and reserved) for first year members to hone their skills in their chosen cluster.
